Lal Masjid operation in final phase

The operation against armed men entrenched in Lal Masjid and Jamia Hafsa has entered in the final phase, as intermittent explosions were still heard on Wednesday.

The administration has announced curfew break from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm in sector G-6 of Islamabad after 48 hours. The break will not applied in Lal Masjid and Jamia Hafsa area, authorities said.

The funeral prayers of 9 soldiers martyred in the operation were observed at Chaklala Airbase today.

The lists of persons killed and wounded in the operation have been displayed including the names of 16 dead and 150 wounded persons.

The ministry of interior has said that tunnels have been found in Jamia Hafsa premises.

Pak Army spokesman, Major General Waheed Arshad has said that the operation silence was in its final phase.

Elaborating further he said that the first phase was focused on getting the madressah and the residences of Rashid Ghazi and his militants cleared and vacated. He said that nothing definite could be said at the moment about the number of persons dead. He said that the second phase of the operation was to begin, in which, it would be ensured that that there was no mine or bomb within Lal Masjid and Jamia Hafsa that might endanger the people working here.

He told that following the second phase, media could be taken for a round at the afternoon or in the evening today. He said that nothing could be said about the death toll of the militants now, as three more militants were killed in the night fighting with the army.
